Underworld Beauty (1958)

(Note that this was a review written for Film-Talk’s World Cinema Club, so it contains plot information and spoilers.)

Underworld Beauty is the earliest Seijun Suzuki film available on DVD. Produced by Nikkatsu Studios in 1958, Suzuki had been with the studio for two years as a full-fledged director, making B-movies. Already we can see Suzuki shaping the style and technique that has become so distinct over the years.

Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

“Force more powerful than 1,000 H-Bombs unleashed to devastate earth! World in panic! Cities in flames!”

Quatermass and the Pit directed by Roy Ward Baker is the third (and widely considered the best) film in a Hammer produced trilogy that follows Quatermass Experiment (1955) and Quatermass II (1957). The films are based on the BBC serials of the same name created by Nigel Kneale. Kneale effectively used Cold War paranoia and fear to his advantage in his tales of Professer Quatermass and his encounters with alien beings threatening to destroy humanity.
